Tanning is the natural response of the skin to Ultraviolet light exposure.  When you use indoor tanning beds, your ski produces a tan the same way as tanning in the sun through ultraviolet light.  There is one important difference, thought.  When you are out in the sun, you cannot control the amount of UV light you are exposed to, because it is affected by changes in the atmosphere.  Indoor tanning is one way to regulate the amount of UV light you are exposed to, because it is a controlled environment.  You can gradually increase your exposure time to ensure you do not sunburn, which is harmful to the skin.

Tanning takes place in the skins outermost layer, the epidermis.  The UVB bulbs in the beds produce melanin which is responsible for your tan.  The UVA bulbs help the melanin oxidize and darken.

In order to avoid overexposure, a tan should be acquired gradually, according to the guidelines prescribed by your salon specialist.
